11:12Dieter Rams is one of the most influential industrial designers. Don’t go wandering very far to catch a glimpse of his influence; it should suffice to have a look at Jony Ive’s designs for every Apple product. Here are his Ten Principles to good design:
Good design is innovative.
Good design makes a product useful.
Good design is aesthetic.
Good design makes a product understandable.
Good design is unobtrusive.
Good design is honest.
Good design is long–lasting.
Good design is thorough, down to the last detail.
Good design is environmentally friendly.
Good design is as little design as possible.tags // #design #Dieter Rams #principles #ten commandments

23:52Konstantin Grcic: Designer of the Year

It’s always fun to see your favorites rewarded and Konstantin Grcic is really high up on my list. He’s going to receive the Designer of the Year Award at Design Miami in early December, along with getting to exhibit an installation called Netscape, consisting of 24 swing seats for the visitors of the Show.

22:55Say hello to the New Routemaster

London’s Routemaster, the iconic double–decker red bus, had served the city since the 50’s, when in 2005 it was finally deemed unsustainable and was swiftly retired from its duties. Its design throughout the years had became a symbol to the city, as well as an important tourist attraction, somewhat as recognizable as the Big Ben. In 2008, the new City mayor Boris Johnson held an international design competition in order to find an appropriate replacement, one capable of living up to its predecessor’s fame. Two joint winners where selected through this process, one by bus design company Capoco and another by Foster and Partners with the support of Aston Martin.
By late 2009 the bus company Wrightbus was awarded the contract to create the New Routemaster and the enfant terrible of english architecture and design, Thomas Heatherwick, was asked to join in order to style the final design. The New Routemaster was presented a few days ago to the public and is expected to hit the streets by early 2012, in time for the Summer Olympics.
